But like any big star, everybody\u2019s looking to see how Spotify spends its wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m not willing to contribute my life&#8217;s work to an experiment that I don&#8217;t feel fairly compensates the writers, producers, artists, and creators of this music,\u201d says Taylor Swift \u2013 whose <a href=\"http:\/\/theverge.com\/2017\/6\/9\/15767986\/taylor-swift-apple-music-spotify-statements-timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">love-hate relationship<\/a> with Spotify is well-documented. Damon from Galaxie 500 takes a more <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/features\/oped\/how-to-be-a-responsible-music-fan-in-the-age-of-streaming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forensic<\/a> approach: \u201cSpotify\u2026 sent songwriting royalties of $1.05 for the 5,960 times our single \u201cTugboat\u201d was played that quarter\u2014split between the group\u2019s three members, each of us had made 35 cents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n<p><style>#primary {width: 100%;}#secondary {display: none;}.post-thumbnail {width: inherit;}.post-thumbnail img {width: 100%;}<\/style>\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, top stars make millions of dollars per song on the service. It\u2019s clear that the Spotify economy looks very different depending on where you\u2019re standing. So, while everyone knows that it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thebaffler.com\/downstream\/streambait-pop-pelly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">streambait<\/a>-or-bust for unknown artists, just how well are the famous ones doing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Top Dollar calculated the earnings of 100 top-earning (living) Spotify artists and the 100 most-played songs on the service. Here\u2019s Spotify\u2019s 2021 \u201cRich List\u201d \u2013 by star, genre, and hit record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Findings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; <strong>Drake<\/strong> is <strong>Spotify\u2019s highest earner<\/strong>, with an estimated haul of <strong>$52,546,150<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; The <strong>top-grossing song<\/strong> on Spotify is <strong>Shape of You<\/strong>, which earned <strong>Ed Sheeran $6,566,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; Spotify\u2019s <strong>10 highest-earners<\/strong> have made a combined <strong>$337,485,480<\/strong> from the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf&nbsp; The <strong>highest-earning song from before 2010<\/strong> is <strong>Queen\u2019s Bohemian Rhapsody<\/strong>, which has made <strong>$3,349,150<\/strong> on Spotify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drake Earned $15M (or 37%) More Than Closest Rival J Balvin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"801\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.accrediteddebtrelief.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/17AX0HnXlHp1AePcvMP7wELR65KE5Ek6MU4NCsLYabZKp-801x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.accrediteddebtrelief.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/17AX0HnXlHp1AePcvMP7wELR65KE5Ek6MU4NCsLYabZKp-801x1024.png 801w, https:\/\/www.accrediteddebtrelief.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/17AX0HnXlHp1AePcvMP7wELR65KE5Ek6MU4NCsLYabZKp-235x300.png 235w, https:\/\/www.accrediteddebtrelief.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/17AX0HnXlHp1AePcvMP7wELR65KE5Ek6MU4NCsLYabZKp-768x982.png 768w, https:\/\/www.accrediteddebtrelief.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/17AX0HnXlHp1AePcvMP7wELR65KE5Ek6MU4NCsLYabZKp-297x380.png 297w, https:\/\/www.accrediteddebtrelief.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/17AX0HnXlHp1AePcvMP7wELR65KE5Ek6MU4NCsLYabZKp.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 801px) 100vw, 801px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Drake is the king of Spotify. With estimated earnings of nearly $53.5 million from the platform, Drake towers over the next highest earners: J Balvin, Post Malone, Bad Bunny, and Ed Sheeran have each made $36-38 million each. Drake has long been <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/07\/03\/spotify-users-push-back-at-the-over-the-top-drake-promotion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spotify\u2019s favorite son<\/a>. The company promoted the Canadian\u2019s work through the service\u2019s first global takeover and has strapped his image to playlists that don\u2019t even feature Drake\u2019s music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ariana Grande is the top-earning woman on Spotify. Her $27.2 million paycheck makes Grande the eighth highest earner of all. Noted streaming cynic Taylor Swift is number 40 with $10.5 million. Playing hard-to-get with Spotify seems to have cost Swift a higher position. Outside of Spotify, she was named the <a href=\"http:\/\/forbes.com\/celebrities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">25<sup>th<\/sup> top-earning celebrity<\/a> in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip-Hop\/R&amp;B Artists Dominate Spotify Rich List<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This chart shows Spotify\u2019s highest earners overall. Click the tabs to sort the artists by genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"spotify-rich-list-artist\" src=\"\/\/embed.neomam.com\/spotify-rich-list\/artist\/\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"100%\" height=\"1350px\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Hip-hop\/R&amp;B is the most represented genre in our study, with 33 of the top 100 artists performing in this flavor. Pop is the second-top genre (29 artists). Music lovers outside of Latin America might be surprised to find reggaet\u00f3n makes a healthy third-place appearance with 20 top artists \u2013 including overall number two J Balvin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outlying genres include K-pop and Sertanejo, which are each represented by just one top-100 artist. For K-pop, it\u2019s boy band BTS, who partnered with Spotify to create a unique album promotion for 2020\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bts-be.withspotify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BE<\/a> album. Sertanejo star Mar\u00edlia Mendon\u00e7a is the <a href=\"https:\/\/f5.folha.uol.com.br\/musica\/2019\/03\/marilia-mendonca-anitta-e-ariana-grande-sao-as-mulheres-mais-ouvidas-no-spotify-no-brasil.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most-heard<\/a> woman on Spotify in Brazil, and we estimate she has earned $6.6 million through the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ed Sheeran Hit is Spotify\u2019s Big Grosser<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"spotify-rich-list-song\" src=\"\/\/embed.neomam.com\/spotify-rich-list\/song\/\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"100%\" height=\"1420px\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Say what you will about Ed Sheeran, people keep playing his music. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtv.com\/news\/2969460\/ed-sheeran-shape-you-castle-hill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shape Of You<\/a> has over 2.68 billion plays, adding more than $6.5 million to Sheeran\u2019s wealth. Sheeran and his songwriting team originally conceived the song for Rihanna, but held it back at the last minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rihanna does appear in our chart, though, guesting on Calvin Harris\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/3pEgGUv379EDinvg1TN7Kt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This Is What You Came For<\/a>. This track is number 88 in our hit parade. Its 1.09 billion streams earned Harris and Rihanna around $2,680,300.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Classic Rock and Pop Anthems Are Hits Across the Decades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We calculated the top-earning songs on Spotify from each decade since the 1960s. Click the tabs to switch between decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"width:600px;max-width:100%;margin:auto\"><div style=\"width:100%;height:0;padding-bottom:98%\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"spotify-rich-list-gallery\" src=\"\/\/embed.neomam.com\/spotify-rich-list\/#slide-1\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"100%\" height=\"590px\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The top ten for each decade provides a curious window into each period. Spotify\u2019s historic big-hitters tend to be anthems \u2013 who hasn\u2019t cued-up <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/0kBfgEilUFCMIQY5IOjG4t?highlight=spotify:track:37ZJ0p5Jm13JPevGcx4SkF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Livin\u2019 on a Prayer<\/a> (number 7 from the 1980s) or Wonderwall (earned Oasis $2.5 million on Spotify) at a party or on a road trip?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And special mention has to go to the true champions of Spotify, the masters of the anthem: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/the-50-best-queen-songs-of-all-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Queen<\/a>. Freddie Mercury\u2019s pop-rock ensemble has three of the top 10 tracks from the 1970s (including numbers one and two) and also made it onto the 1980s list with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereogum.com\/2079401\/the-number-ones-queens-another-one-bites-the-dust\/columns\/the-number-ones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Another One Bites the Dust<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes millions of plays to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hypebot.com\/hypebot\/2019\/12\/how-many-spotify-streams-are-necessary-to-live-above-the-poverty-line.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">make a living on Spotify<\/a>. The artists earning the most from Spotify may be the ones who would have earned the most on older formats or if Spotify paid <a href=\"https:\/\/theundefeated.com\/features\/a-change-in-spotifys-royalty-payments-could-be-a-problem-for-hip-hop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fairer royalties<\/a> \u2013 but the rich-poor divide and the value of music are still to play for as streaming comes of age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Methodology &amp; Sources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We extracted the <a href=\"https:\/\/kworb.net\/spotify\/artists.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top 100 artists<\/a> based on Spotify streams (leaving out the artists who have passed away). Then we calculated each one&#8217;s total earnings (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2020\/08\/17\/how-much-does-spotify-pay-per-stream-latest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assuming that one stream equates to $0.0049<\/a>) and halved the total figure because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotifys-direct-distribution-deals-what-do-the-artists-get\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top artists only receive about 50% of revenue from streams<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we pulled the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_most-streamed_songs_on_Spotify\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of top 100 most-streamed songs and most-streamed songs since 1960<\/a> and calculated earnings the same way as for the artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data collected in January 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spotify might just be the biggest star in 21st century music.
