How did the debt begin?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I was a single mom. My son\u2019s father lost his job, and I inherited all the bills at once. Daycare was the most expensive. I was using credit cards to make ends meet. Before I knew it, I was $13,000 in debt.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did the debt affect your life and well-being?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I was keeping up with it \u2014 paying everything on time, but my credit utilization was over 99% on my cards, and I was still dishing out minimum payments. When life happens, it feels like you\u2019re trapped.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was your lightbulb moment?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I was paying over maybe four or $500 a month just trying to meet minimum payments. So they were making a killing off of me in interest.<\/em> <\/em>I realized there’s no way I’m gonna pay these balances. I was like, \u201cwhy don’t I just consolidate this stuff into one payment?\u201d I thought I\u2019ll probably never use these cards again. I’m ready to let go. I just need something or someone to help me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did the first call make you feel?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I don’t remember my representative’s name but I will never forget his voice because he was so reassuring. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was like \u201clisten, my job is to help you. It’s not to sell you anything. If you join us, you can start fresh.\u201d And it resonated with me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did you learn along the way? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

They gave me a safety net, but more than that, they gave me financial literacy. Now I know how to live life debt-free \u2014 and how to teach my kids to do the same. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My financial habits have absolutely changed. Even though the debt wasn\u2019t totally my fault, I still look back and see some things I could\u2019ve avoided \u2014 like buying a $3,000 couch when I didn\u2019t need to. But that\u2019s hindsight. Now I know better. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did it feel when you graduated? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It felt like there should\u2019ve been a ceremony! I got that final email, \u201cCongratulations, you\u2019re done,\u201d and I just thought, \u201cWow, I made it!\u201d I even told Beyond, we need a virtual graduation \u2014 let us celebrate together. (laughs) It was an amazing feeling.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What was waiting for you on the other side of debt?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s been amazing. I feel like I\u2019m back. I can go on vacation twice a year\u2026 because I understand how to budget for it. I went to Mexico \u2014 but we saved up for it and didn\u2019t use credit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I went from driving a 1996 Toyota Avalon\u2026 and now I have a 2025 Lexus RX 350 with a good interest rate. They ran my credit and were like, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d I couldn\u2019t believe it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I was able to save enough money to redo my floors and have a new kitchen built.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
