BNPL used to be a way to spread out the cost of a vacation or concert tickets. For families working out how to cover food this month, it&#8217;s now one of the easiest options within reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Buy now, pay later is fairly accessible and it is a solution to the problem of paying for daily life for so many people increasingly,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Buy Now, Pay Later for Groceries? The first plan feels manageable. Then a second one starts, then a third, and the payment dates get harder to track. A late or missed payment can follow, and from there it can start to affect a credit score, on top of the stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s buy now, but it is very much pay later and the debts do come due,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rebell named the signs that BNPL use has become a problem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More than one plan open at the same time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plans covering daily expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One plan being used to pay down another<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not knowing the total amount owed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If you are losing sleep, if you have stress and anxiety, that is time to go and get help,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For people whose income no longer covers the essentials, Rebell suggested starting with the budget. That means reframing what counts as essential, looking closely at the grocery bill, meal planning and finding ways to bring in more income.
