CFP\u00ae is simply the short form of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER\u00ae, so a CFP\u00ae professional and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER\u00ae professional have met identical requirements. If you see one form on a business card, another in an email signature and the logo on a website, you are looking at one certification described three ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes it a credential, not a license to practice. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investor.gov\/introduction-investing\/general-resources\/news-alerts\/alerts-bulletins\/investor-bulletins-64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEC<\/a> makes the distinction directly: professional designations are not issued or overseen by federal or state regulators, and requirements vary enormously between them. Certification tells you about training and agreed-to standards. It does not tell you whether someone is registered to sell you anything, which is a separate free check at investor.gov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Four Requirements to Earn the Certification<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CFP Board calls them the four E&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Education.<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/certification-process\/education-requirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bachelor&#8217;s degree<\/a> in any subject, plus financial planning coursework through a CFP Board Registered Program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exam.<\/strong> A rigorous exam of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/certification-process\/exam-requirement\/about-the-cfp-exam\/exam-format\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">170 multiple-choice questions<\/a>, given in two three-hour sessions. In the most recent sitting, July 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/certification-process\/exam-requirement\/about-the-cfp-exam\/scoring-and-results\/exam-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2,388 of 3,621 candidates passed<\/a>, a rate of 66%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Experience.<\/strong> Either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/certification-process\/experience-requirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6,000 hours<\/a> of professional experience related to the financial planning process, or 4,000 hours of apprenticeship experience that carries extra requirements on top.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ethics.<\/strong> A background check, plus a written commitment to CFP Board&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/ethics\/code-of-ethics-and-standards-of-conduct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A CFP\u00ae Professional is a Fiduciary: Here\u2019s Why That Matters&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fiduciary is someone legally or professionally required to put your interests ahead of their own. A financial professional who is not a fiduciary can recommend a product that pays them more, as long as it&#8217;s suitable for you. A fiduciary must recommend the product that is the <em>best<\/em> choice for you, not just one that is suitable based on the information you gave them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Think of it this way:<\/strong> You walk up to a makeup counter and ask for lipstick. One salesperson points you to the shade that pays them the highest commission and calls it their pick for you. It isn&#8217;t the best shade for you, but it&#8217;s suitable, because you did ask for lipstick. Another salesperson asks what you&#8217;re wearing and looks at your coloring first, then hands you a different shade from the same counter. Even though pays them less, they prioritized your needs over their own.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CFP Board&#8217;s standard is that at all times when providing financial advice, a CFP\u00ae professional must act as a fiduciary. That breaks into three duties:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Loyalty:<\/strong> putting your interests above the professional&#8217;s and the firm&#8217;s<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Care:<\/strong> acting with the skill and prudence your goals and circumstances require<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Following instructions:<\/strong> carrying out your reasonable and lawful directions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conflicts of interest are not banned outright but they do have to be avoided, or disclosed specifically enough that you understand them and can consent. A sincere belief that you are being well served does not excuse leaving a conflict unsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/ethics\/code-of-ethics-and-standards-of-conduct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct<\/a> also governs how pay gets described. A CFP\u00ae professional may claim &#8220;fee-only&#8221; only if neither they nor their firm receives sales-related compensation, like commissions or referral fees. So ask how someone gets paid. The answer has rules attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strong Continuing Education Requirements&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every certificant completes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/for-cfp-pros\/continuing-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30 hours of continuing education<\/a> per reporting period, two of them in CFP Board ethics. The board is also increasing its standards. Starting in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/news\/2026\/01\/cfp-board-strengthens-competency-standards-for-a-changing-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beginning in the first quarter of 2027<\/a>, the requirement will go up to 40 hours, still including the two ethics hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CFP Board also disciplines certificants and publishes the results, so you can confirm that a certification is current and see any public discipline through its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/verify-a-cfp-professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Verify a CFP\u00ae Professional<\/a> tool. A clean record is not a promise of good advice. It is a floor, and plenty of people advertising financial help do not clear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Credential Does Not Cover<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The certification is not a law license, a CPA license or a credit counseling credential. A CFP\u00ae professional can plan around your taxes without preparing your return, and around your estate without drafting your will. It also says nothing about specialty: someone excellent at retirement income may rarely work with a household whose problem is this month&#8217;s minimum payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>FAQ<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is a CFP\u00ae professional the same thing as a financial advisor?<\/strong> No. &#8220;Financial advisor&#8221; is a job title anyone may use. CFP\u00ae certification is a credential with education, exam, experience and ethics requirements, and a fiduciary duty attached to financial advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do I check whether someone&#8217;s CFP\u00ae certification is current?<\/strong> Search their name in CFP Board&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/verify-a-cfp-professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Verify a CFP\u00ae Professional<\/a> tool, which shows certification status and public discipline. Then check registration separately at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investor.gov\/introduction-investing\/getting-started\/working-investment-professional\/check-out-your-investment-professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investor.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can a CFP\u00ae professional help me with credit card debt?<\/strong> Some do, and many start by looking at your cash flow.
