Debt rarely comes when you’re ready for it. It’s the check engine light blinking on just before a big event, a surprise trip to the vet right after a move or extra fees for your kid’s little league.

Those are the three moments in the ads we launched in August with Rob Lowe. The spots are dramatizations, but the situations behind them aren’t. Jeanne P., Danielle Z. and Juliana S. each found our program after debt arrived without warning — and discovered the power of professional relief.

Real Debt Relief Stories

Unexpected Bills Put Jeanne P.’s Life on Hold

Real Accredited Debt Relief client Jeanne P.

Jeanne’s debt didn’t come from anything reckless. The cost of living kept climbing while her salary stayed flat, and then serious health problems arrived and brought their own bills. As she puts it, she was “robbing Peter to pay Paul” just to stay afloat. Eventually, she ran out of borrowing options — then spent months researching alternatives online before finally calling us. When she enrolled $52,856 in 2024, her monthly payments immediately dropped by $1,006. Her advice to anyone hesitating: “You should not be embarrassed or ashamed. We are all in the same boat.”

Danielle Z.’s Debts Began with a Home Repair

A registered nurse and single mom, Danielle’s debt started with expensive and unexpected sewer work at her home, then spiraled after a cancer diagnosis forced her to stop working for a few months. On one income, credit cards became the way she covered her family’s needs. Now back at work and putting in overtime, Danielle knew that taking a second job meant giving up what little time she had with her son. Sitting at her kitchen table deciding which bills she could afford that month, she realized she couldn’t budget her way out. “I realized I was just existing, not living,” she says. And when she enrolled in 2024, Danielle felt the immediate and powerful relief our program provides.

Juliana S. Overcame Her Debt for Her Kids

Juliana is an office manager in Texas and a mom of two. Last year, her husband needed three unplanned surgeries and couldn’t work for months. Credit cards covered the groceries, the medical bills and everything else the missing income used to handle. By the time their son was born in June, every card was maxed out and the minimum payments were no longer realistic. She enrolled $36,970 in 2024, and her monthly payments instantly dropped by $1,170. For her and her family, that extra money each month made all the difference to their stability.

These stories, along with countless others, reflect the real, stressful experiences Americans in debt face every day. We’re proud that our campaign champions the resilience of the people we serve every day.

These stories are from real clients who were compensated for taking the time to share their experiences with us. Clients save an average of $608 on their monthly payments. Savings were calculated by subtracting their program payment from their self-reported payments or tradeline minimums on eligible accounts.

Rob Lowe Knows the Power of Experience

Rob Lowe, actor, producer, entrepreneur and author, has made a living telling stories. And it was our clients’ experiences that drew him to this campaign.

“One of the things that resonated with me about Accredited Debt Relief is their understanding that behind every financial situation is a real person,” Lowe said. “This campaign is really about reminding people that they’re not alone. The truth is, financial setbacks happen to more people than we often realize, and nobody should feel like they have to face those challenges by themselves.”

Rather than simply appearing in these spots, Lowe participated by honing the ads’ creative direction, wanting to show the reality of what families in debt actually go through.

“Financial challenges affect people from every background, income level, and stage of life,” said Lauren Gordon, senior vice president of marketing, Accredited Debt Relief. “This campaign is about normalizing those conversations and helping people understand they are not alone. Millions of Americans are navigating financial difficulties, and there are solutions available to help them move forward.”

The State of Debt in America Today

Debt is a powerful force in the lives of many Americans. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reports that household debt reached $18.8 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, with 4.7% of all outstanding debt in some stage of delinquency. A family struggling with the choice to keep their kid in baseball, or for a check engine light to represent financial trouble are real stressors for millions of households across the country.

What’s more, many people struggle to confront their debt, even with the people they love and trust. Accredited Debt Relief’s Debt Impact survey of 2,000 Americans carrying at least $10,000 in unsecured debt found that 22% say their spouse or partner doesn’t know the full extent of what they owe, and more than half say their friends don’t know. Of people who reported hiding their debt from their loved ones, 56% of respondents said it’s because they feel like they should be able to fix it themselves. And that’s precisely why sharing stories anchored in reality is so important.

“Many of our poor money decisions are driven by shame and wanting to avoid having financial problems impact loved ones at all costs. That’s an expensive strategy and not a solution” said Bobbi Rebell, our Chief Financial Education Advisor. “But while  trying to figure out a plan, stress and anxiety grow, along with the debt balances.”

Our clients reach out to us to get that judgement-free support. Since 2011, we’ve helped more than 1.3 million people and resolved more than $15 billion in client debt. And our clients immediately feel the difference of joining our program: Jeanne, Danielle and Juliana each saw significant savings each month, and that flexibility was essential to their journey out of debt and into financial freedom.

What kinds of debt can the program help with?

Our program is built for unsecured debt: credit cards, personal loans, medical bills and some private student loans.
